Another great day spent working with @_explore4mor

Another great day spent working with @_explore4more_ delivering a survival module within a HEAT (hostile environment awareness training) programme.

The physiological demands of the human body make short term survival training principles pretty standardardised. Nothing ground breaking about presenting the rules of three, though @megan_hine has done some deeper and more original thinking on that adding in seconds and months for consideration.

I've followed @jmbushcraft for over a decade and love the effort they put into presenting bushcraft information in a researched and often original format.

A very early podcast episode that Tim Smith released looked at survival prioritisation and his presentation of WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW, WHAT YOU NEED TO DO AND WHAT YOU NEED TO CARRY has influenced my teaching ever since although since studying with @lisa_fenton_ I've used a venn diagram to explain this relationship!

The 5 C's is pretty well covered by @pathfindersurvival and I remember attending a bushcraft show where Dave delivered a great talk on the influence of these 5 abilities enabled by non specific items - often this is central to what I teach regardless of 1 day survival training or within a year long primitive skills course @livingbynatureuk

So all of these tips of the hat and @mentions are to say that what we teach is shaped by a web of influences even though the factual content might be seen as 'fixed' and not belonging to anyone.

Here's to a growing internationally connected, respectful and informed industry community!

Well! Another month, another Year Course module th

Well! Another month, another Year Course module this time led by the incredible @memmathecavewoman Sarah Day taking our students through all things primitive pottery and clay.

The transformative techniques of working with clay and fleece are fascinating and it was such a pleasure to see Sarah delivering these ancient techniques in such an accessible and understandable way.

Last month we were out starting the group down the journey of tanning (more reels to come!) so all in all we have some very busy crafters!

In April 2026 I'll be heading out to Japan with @thijmen_apswoude to take a collaborative course between @livingbynatureofficial and hosted by Lee @british_bushcraft_japan who I met briefly at the 2022 global Bushcraft symposium in Wales.

I met Thijmen as a complete fluke when I was asked to assist guide a snowshoe trip with @lureofthenorth in early 2019. We had a fairly tough mix of weather over the 12 days on the trail with an epic route through the lakes and portages of Killarney national park, Ontario expertly led by Dave Marine.

We've become good pals since those cold snowy days and spent a lot of time in the woods together learning and laughing but I never thought I'd end up heading out to the bamboo forests of the far east with him!

Here's a little peek at a bow making weekend course over in Northern Ireland working in collaboration with the awesome Paul Moore @wildwalkbushcraft that concluded today after three days of learning and laughs.

I can't thank our group enough for being so enthused, patient and steadfast in their drive to craft a seasoned Ash wood stave into a functioning mesolithic style flat bow.

I love working with Paul as we share a keep it real ethos with everything we try to deliver and his instructor hosting skills are next level!

Kevin Costner once said 'what do we need the forest cannot provide!?' Questionable accent but solid sentiment Kev 💪 love a bit of Robin Hood!

In the early part of this year myself and JD @howlbushcraft were invited onto the @paulkirtley podcast.

We spent a few hours chatting about a pretty wide range of topics but Paul did a great job keeping us on track to share our Bushcraft origin stories and discuss the outdoor experiences and influences that have shaped our respective practice.

One of the questions I've been asked most frequently on courses is 'so...how did you get into this then?' it's been fantastic to be hosted by Paul to answer exactly that and ultimately how it has led to some highly enjoyable collaborative work!

Another epic instalment of @livingbynatureofficial The Year Course UK, same great group, different location, different projects and deepening knowledge, views and relationships with the forest.

This time our activity centered around fibres and the need to carry, contain, construct and bind. The group started on their pack baskets used for their end expedition as well as a Sweet chestnut folded bark basket.

Next time we gather we take a deep dive into tanning!

This year's Global Bushcraft Symposium was held in Sweden and focused on 'the Nordic way'. A real pleasure to hang out as peers with old friends and get to meet a whole bunch of new ones over a few beers and bbq's!

It's not often I get to be the participant in a bushcraft class and it was so nice to sit in on some of the great classes, workshops, key note speeches and guided walks.

Thanks to all the team @johanskullman and the wider @globalbushcraftsymposium delegates, supporters, live band, and staff for putting on a great experience.
